PDF converter

A PDF converter for both directions

Turning a file into a PDF and turning a PDF into something else are different jobs, so each conversion has its own converter, with settings that fit its format. This PDF format converter lists them all; the conversion itself happens on the page of the converter you pick, where you add your file.

Converters that make a PDF work in two ways. The image converters place your pictures on pages, with a page size of A4, Letter or Legal, or one that matches each image. Office, text, RTF and HTML files are laid out as pages from their text and styles, so you convert Word to PDF the same way you convert Excel or PowerPoint to PDF, and Website to PDF captures a live page from its address.

Converters that start from a PDF also work in two ways. The image converters draw each page as a picture, exactly as it looks. Choose to convert PDF to Word or convert PDF to Excel to read the text and tables stored in the file instead, which is why those results can be edited, and why a scanned page with no text layer gives them nothing to read.

Picking one

Which converter fits your file

  • Mixed image types

Images to PDF takes JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP in one batch. The single-format converters accept only their own type.

  • Scanned documents

Run OCR PDF on a scan first. It adds a text layer, which gives PDF to Word something to convert.

  • Pictures inside a PDF

To save the photos a PDF contains rather than images of whole pages, use Extract Images.

  • A site you want to keep

Website to PDF captures a live page from its address. HTML to PDF converts an .html file you already have, with optional CSS of your own.

  • Vector artwork

SVG to PDF keeps a vector drawing sharp at any zoom, rather than turning it into a fixed grid of pixels.

  • A single picture

For one photo rather than a batch, Image to PDF still turns it into a single-page PDF.

Three steps

How to convert PDF files

  1. Find the converter

Use → PDF for files that should become a PDF and PDF → for PDFs you want in another format, or search by format.

  2. Open its page

Click the card. The converter opens with its upload box at the top and its own settings below.

  3. Convert and download

Add your file, adjust the settings that converter offers and download the result.

Not a conversion

When another tool fits better

  • When size is the problem

If the aim is a lighter PDF rather than a different format, Compress PDF is the tool for it.

  • Pages the wrong way round

A scanned or converted page that comes out sideways can be turned upright with Rotate PDF.

  • Before sending it on

Give a freshly converted PDF a password with Protect PDF before you send it on.

  • Ready for a signature

To sign a document you have just turned into a PDF, open it in Sign PDF.

With most converters, yes. Images are combined into one PDF. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF to Word and PDF to Excel convert each file on its own and hand the results back together in a ZIP. TXT, HTML and the PDF to image converters take one file at a time, and Website to PDF one address.

Yes. Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF accept the older .doc, .xls and .ppt files as well as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx, even though the cards above name only the newer formats.

PDF to Images lets you choose PNG, JPG or WebP on its page. PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG and PDF to WebP each produce that one format, and all four let you convert all pages or just a range.

Not with these converters. A PDF can become images, a Word document or an Excel workbook. For text you can copy out of a scan, make the PDF searchable with OCR PDF.

It still returns a workbook. Each table it finds gets a sheet of its own, named after its page and position, and when there are none, the text of every page goes into a single sheet, one line per row.

Yes, the original name is kept with the new extension, and a new PDF also gets a short site suffix. A batch arrives as one ZIP named after the kind of conversion and the number of files in it.

Yes, with RTF to PDF. It takes several .rtf files at once and returns a PDF for each.

Each document is converted into a PDF of its own. Put them together afterwards with Merge PDF, where you can also set their order.
