TIFF to PDF, every page of every file

Browsers can't display TIFF, which is why the file list shows a placeholder instead of a thumbnail. The conversion runs on the server instead: each file is read there, and every page inside it becomes a PDF page, so a multi-page scan or fax arrives as one document in its original page order.

Several TIFFs are converted one after another and joined in the order of your list. A single file keeps its name, ending in .pdf instead of .tif or .tiff; a batch is saved as tiff-merged.pdf.

Page Orientation

Multi-page TIFF to PDF with mixed orientations

Scans often mix upright and wide pages, and each page can get the orientation that suits it.

  • Horizontal

Every page is landscape. Tall scans are scaled down to fit the wider sheet.

  • Vertical Default

Every page is portrait, whatever the shape of the scan on it.

  • Auto

Each page follows its own scan: wide pages get a landscape sheet, tall ones a portrait sheet.

Worth knowing

How tif to PDF conversion treats your scans

  • Scan resolution respected

With Auto (Match Image), the page size comes from the resolution stored in the file, so a 300 dpi scan of an A4 page makes an A4 page. Without a stored value, 72 dpi is assumed.

  • Converted to RGB

Every page is turned into RGB color: CMYK and grayscale scans become RGB, and any transparency is dropped.

  • All pixels kept

Each page image goes in with its full pixel count. On A4, Letter or Legal it is scaled to fit the sheet, never cropped.

  • Pictures, not text

Scanned pages stay images, so their text can't be searched or selected. OCR PDF can read the words out as plain text.

When it helps

When to convert a TIFF scan to PDF

  • Multi-page scans from an office scanner

Many desktop scanners save a stack of pages as one multi-page TIFF; turning it into a PDF lets any PDF viewer open it.

  • Fax documents received as TIFF

Fax software commonly delivers pages as TIFF attachments; a PDF opens the same way in any email or document app.

  • Archival scans from a document management system

Records kept as TIFF for long-term storage convert into a format that is easier to review and forward day to day.

  • Engineering or architectural drawings

Large-format drawings exported as TIFF from CAD software become a PDF that colleagues without that software can still open.

Three steps

How to convert TIFF to PDF

  1. Add the TIFF files

Drop them in; a placeholder icon stands in for a thumbnail since the browser can't preview them.

  2. Set the order and page

Arrange the files, then choose Page Orientation and Page Size for the pages that come out of them.

  3. Convert and download

Click Convert to PDF and wait for the server to finish reading every page of every file.

Yes. .tif and .tiff are two extensions for the same format, and this page takes both.

Page Orientation starts on Vertical, and it applies even with Auto (Match Image): a wide page is made upright and the scan shrinks to fit. Switch to Auto to keep every page the shape of its scan.

Pages keep the order they have inside each file. To move them around, open the PDF in Organize PDF.

The conversion stops with an error and no PDF is made. Convert the files one at a time to find the one that fails, then save it again from your scanning app.

Your browser can't decode TIFF, so each file is uploaded to the server, opened there page by page, and the result is sent back. That round trip takes longer than a conversion your browser does on its own.

With Auto (Match Image) under Page Size, yes: each page's size comes from that page's own resolution, so a fax with mixed page dimensions keeps that mix. A4, Letter or Legal gives every page the same sheet instead.

No, the Page Orientation you pick applies to every file converted in that run. Convert files that need a different setting in a separate batch.

Only up to the site's upload limit; a file past that limit is rejected before conversion starts. Very large multi-page scans may need splitting into smaller TIFFs first.

TIFF stores one or more scanned or drawn pages as pixels, with no built-in viewer of its own. PDF adds that viewer, plus fonts and text, which is why a TIFF scan usually ends its life as a PDF.
