Overlay PDF Files

Overlay multiple PDF files into a single document. Files are layered in the order you select.

Add at least two PDFs. The first file is the base layer, and additional files are drawn on top.

Overlay PDF pages on top of each other

Page 1 of every file lands on page 1 of the result, page 2 on page 2, and so on, so the new PDF has as many pages as your longest file.

Layers above the first are blended so their white areas stay see-through, and where coloured areas overlap they darken, like ink printed over ink. That is why dark content on a white page layers cleanly, while a grey or coloured background dims the whole page, wherever it sits in the stack.

Layers cleanly

  • Dark text on white
  • Line drawings and plans
  • Logos on a white page

Dims the whole page

  • Scans with a grey background
  • Full-page photos
  • Pages with a coloured fill
Layer rules

How the PDF layers line up

  • The first file sets the size

Each page of the result takes its size from the first file in the list that has that page.

  • Other layers scale to fit

A page of a different size is scaled to fit that page, keeping its proportions, and centred on it.

  • Shorter files stop early

When a file runs out of pages, the later pages of the result are built from the files that still have them.

  • Drag to restack

Move a file up or down the list by its grip to change which layer sits where. The cross on a file card takes it out of the stack.

What carries over

What the PDF overlay tool keeps and drops

Each file's page is placed onto the result page whole, as one piece of artwork. Nothing is turned into an image, so text in every layer stays text and stays sharp at any zoom.

Links, comments and form fields sit on top of a page rather than in its artwork, so they don't come along into the layered result. Bookmarks and document details such as the title and author are not copied either, since the result is a new file built page by page.

The result is named after the first file in the list and shows how many files were layered and how many pages came out, with a preview to check before you save it.

Common layers

Superimpose PDF files for letterheads and forms

  • Add a letterhead to a PDF

Stack your letterhead file with the letter so the logo and footer print with the text, without retyping the letter into a template.

  • Answers onto a blank form

Lay a file that holds only the filled-in answers over the official blank form.

  • Markup over a drawing

Put a sheet of notes or measurements exported at the same page size over a plan.

  • A background for slides

Place a branded background under exported slides whose own background is white, so the design shows through around the text.

Layers are matched page by page, so a one-page letterhead only covers page 1. For a longer letter, use a letterhead file with as many pages as the letter.

Only on the page with the same number. To land a one-page layer on page 5, put four blank pages in front of it in its file: blank white pages leave the base untouched.

Neither: there is no opacity setting, and only PDF files can be layered. Watermark PDF puts a text or an image on your pages with an opacity you choose.

No, there are no position controls. Make the upper file the same page size as the base, with its content already where it should land, and it lines up exactly.

A file with the same name and size as one already in the list is skipped. Rename a copy first if you really need it twice.

Hardly. Overlapping colours darken the same way whichever file is on top, so a grey scan background dims the page wherever it sits in the stack. The order matters for the page size, which comes from the first file.

Where coloured areas of two layers overlap, they multiply like inks and come out darker. Give the upper file a white background and lighter colours before layering, and only its content will show.

No. A password-protected PDF can't be opened for layering. Unlock it first with Remove Password, then add the unlocked copy.
