Convert PDF to JPG when pages are mostly pictures
JPG saves space by smoothing away detail the eye barely notices. On a scan, a photo or a brochure spread that loss doesn't show, and the file ends up much smaller than a lossless copy. It is also the format almost every upload form, email app and phone gallery accepts. Use this page to convert PDF to JPG image files, or to change PDF to JPG for a form that will not take a PDF.
Every page is drawn at 144 dpi, so a US Letter page becomes a 1224 × 1584 pixel JPG at any quality setting. Empty areas come out white, since JPG has no transparency.
Suits JPG
- Scanned pages
- Photos and artwork
- Brochures and flyers
- Slides full of pictures
Better as PNG
- Fine print and footnotes
- Line drawings and plans
- Charts in flat colours
- Images you'll edit and save again
What happens to a page on its way to JPG
Your browser draws each page onto a canvas and hands it to its JPEG encoder at the quality you chose. Photos inside the PDF go through that encoder as well, so they are compressed a second time on top of whatever compression they already had.
Pages keep the orientation they are shown in: a landscape Letter page comes out 1584 × 1224 pixels. Filled-in form entries, stamps and comment markers are drawn in as well, while layers switched off in the PDF stay hidden. A progress panel counts the pages while they are drawn, and afterwards every page appears as a thumbnail you can open larger.
Pages of different sizes keep their own dimensions in separate files: an A4 page comes out about 1190 × 1684 pixels next to a Letter page at 1224 × 1584. Single combined JPG image stacks the pages top to bottom in page order, each centred on the width of the widest page, and saves them as one picture.
Pick how strongly each JPG is compressed
-
High Quality Default
Saved at quality 95 of 100: close to the page as drawn, and the largest files.
-
Medium Quality
Quality 75 of 100. Files shrink a good deal while photos still look clean.
-
Low Quality (Smaller files)
Quality 60 of 100. The lightest files, with blocky edges starting to show around text.
How to convert a PDF to JPEG
-
Add your PDF
Drop it onto the upload area, one PDF at a time. Thumbnails of its pages appear so you can check it's the right file.
-
Pick pages and quality
List the pages you want, such as 2, 4-6, and choose one of the three quality levels above.
-
Convert and save
Click Convert to JPG. Separate pages arrive in one ZIP through Download All, and the button on each preview saves a single page.
Need smaller pixel sizes?
PDF to Images can also save JPG at 108 or 72 dpi for lighter files, and switch to PNG or WEBP.

Yes. JPEG is the name of the format and .jpg its usual file extension, so a PDF to JPEG conversion gives you the same file. Some programs write .jpeg instead, and both open anywhere a JPG does.
JPG compression blurs hard edges slightly, most of all on Low Quality (Smaller files). For pages that are mostly text, PDF to PNG keeps every edge exact.
It can. The scan is redrawn at 144 dpi, so a page scanned at a higher resolution comes out with fewer pixels. Extract Images saves the scanned picture itself at its original resolution.
Each page is named after your PDF and its page number, such as invoice_page_2.jpg, and the ZIP is called invoice_jpg_pages.zip. A combined image is simply invoice.jpg.
One image can only be so tall: about 32,000 pixels in desktop Chrome and Firefox, and less on phones. At 144 dpi that is around 20 Letter pages. For a longer document, convert it in parts, such as pages 1-20 and then 21-40.
For a page printed at full size, not quite: at 144 dpi text looks softer on paper than it does from the PDF, which prints its letters as sharp outlines. Print from the PDF itself and keep the JPGs for screens, slides and uploads.
Single pages and ranges, separated by commas, such as 1, 5-8. A page listed twice is converted once, the files always follow document order, and numbers past the last page are skipped.
Not while it asks for a password to open, because its pages can't be drawn. Unlock it with Remove Password Protection first, then convert the unlocked copy.
