Three ways to organize PDF pages
Drag the thumbnails, type an order or nudge one page at a time: organise PDF pages whichever way suits the file.
-
Drag a thumbnail
Drop a page on another and it takes that page's place. The pages in between shift along, and the typed order updates to match.
-
Nudge with the arrows
The arrows under each page move it one place to the left or right, handy when you need to arrange one page in a PDF precisely.
-
Type the order
List page numbers and ranges in the order you want, the fastest route through a PDF document organizer. The thumbnails and the Current Order line follow as you type.
How to reorder PDF pages by number
The list you type describes the whole new document, from first page to last. A page you leave out of it is not in the new file, so list every page you want to keep.
Clearing the field puts the pages back in their original order, so you can start again at any point. Numbers stay tied to the original file, so 5 always means the page that was fifth when you loaded it.
Accepted
- Single pages: 3, 1, 2
- Ranges: 5-7
- Both mixed: 4, 1-3, 5-12
Skipped
- A page listed a second time
- Numbers past the last page
- Letters and half-typed ranges
What happens when you arrange pages in a PDF
When you click Reorganize PDF, the pages are copied into a new, empty PDF in the sequence shown. Each one keeps its size, orientation and content; only its position changes, and your original file stays as it was.
Numbers printed on the pages are part of their content, so a page printed with a 4 still shows 4 wherever it lands. Bookmarks and the document's title and author details are not copied into the new file.
Clicking a thumbnail opens the page large, which helps tell apart pages that look alike. The result shows how many pages the new file holds, with a preview to confirm the order before you save it.
Dragging a page doesn't redraw it: every thumbnail is generated once when the file loads, then simply moved to its new spot, which keeps reordering quick even in a long PDF. Current Order beneath the field always matches what the thumbnails show, whichever way you last changed it, dragging or typing.
When to rearrange PDF pages
-
Scans in the wrong order
Pages that went through the scanner out of sequence can be put back without scanning again, rearranging PDF pages in the time it takes to type the right order.
-
A summary up front
Move the executive summary or a cover letter to page 1, where readers expect it.
-
Appendices at the back
Send reference material to the end so the main text reads straight through.
-
Slides in a new running order
Match an exported presentation to a revised agenda without exporting it again.
-
Related pages together
Bring the pages that cover one client, product or topic next to each other in a combined report.
-
Matching a paper original
Line a scan back up with its printed original when the order slipped for reasons beyond a single duplex flip.
Is a page facing the wrong way?
Organize PDF moves pages but doesn't turn them. Rotate PDF does, for all pages or only the ones you name.

Type the range backwards: 12-1 for a 12-page file puts the last page first and the first page last. Backward ranges mix with the rest, so 1, 12-2 keeps the cover in front and reverses everything after it.
Type the last page number, then the rest as a range, for example 12, 1-11. Dragging the last thumbnail onto the first does the same.
Type them the other way round, for example 1, 3, 2, 4-12. For neighbouring pages, one click on an arrow does it too.
Type the block as a range in its new place. For a 12-page file, 1-3, 8-10, 4-7, 11-12 moves pages 8 to 10 up behind page 3 and keeps everything else in order.
They wait until the entry makes sense. While a range is half typed, such as 10-, the last complete order stays on screen, and the thumbnails catch up as soon as you finish it.
Yes. Pages are moved as whole pages and their text is never read, so a scan reorders like any other PDF. With no text to search, the thumbnails and the large page view are the way to find the right page.
Whatever is still in the field is applied to the next file you load. Clear the field first if you want to start from the new file's own order.
Not here: Organize PDF works on one document. Add both files to Merge PDF, where pages from every file can be dragged into one order.
